Family
The sources all seem to agree that the branch of the Licinii from which Valerian and his family stemmed was noble and Etruscan. Nevertheless, it is relatively difficult to pin his ancestors in the male line down. Even Valerianus’s father’s name is unknown. It is the family of Valerianus’s wife, the Egnatii, who are provably distinguished. This particular inclination to favour kin when bestowing offices, especially the consulship, may provide a guide to the further reaches of VALERIAN’S family, however. GALLIENUS’S father-in-law enjoyed a second consulship in 260, and the fact that the otherwise obscure C. Salonius Lucullus held the ordinary consulship in 265 may well be explained if we postulate, as here, that he was the Empress Salonina’s uncle. Again, P. Egnatius Marianus’s name strongly suggests that he must be closely related to GALLIENUS, and that he was consul in 268 would appear to confirm it. HA gives VALERIAN an unattested ‘noble kinsman’ Valerius Flaccinus [V. Prob. 5.3].
Settipani has other ideas to offer. He supposes that Gallienus Concessus might be a grandson of M. Junius Maximus (a priest of the cult of Augustus in 180, and thus a patrician) and son of M. Junius Concessus Aemilianus by Licinia Galliena, a putative aunt of VALERIANUS. He also speculates that Concessus married a sister of the emperor GALLUS and that their sons might include Junius Gallienus recorded as a priest of the cult of the sun and Junius Veldumnianus, consul in 272.472 He also suggests that Egnatius Victor was a son of the philosopher A. Egnatius Priscilianus.473
Yet the fact is that there are too few firmly attested relationships for us to be at all sure. The table given here attempts to set out the most convincing pattern of these.
